Sam Francis (1923-1994) was a notable American artist born in California. He initially studied medicine and psychology but was injured in an Air Force plane crash during World War II. After recovering, he began his career as a painter. In the 1950s, Francis moved to Paris, where he held his first exhibition. He returned to California in the 1960s and gained recognition for his distinctive large-scale abstract expressionist style.
