Biography: Sam Francis: (1923-1994) born in San Mateo California, studied Medicine and psychology at Berkeley University, injured serving in Air force plane crash during world war II, hospitalized several years and it was while there that he began to paint then he returned to Berkeley to study art. He spent the 1950 s in Paris having 1st exhibition, also in Japan, his work generally large oil painting with splashed or splattered areas of bright contrasting color, back to California in 1960’s painting large scale of abstract expressionism.
